The first match played at Thomas Lord’s third ground was in the Australia tour of July 1884, their third trip to England with all previous encounters having taken place on the opposite side of London at the Oval. In the Second Test in 1884 at Lord’s England won by an innings and 5 runs; a century for A.G. Steel was the first on the ground in Tests.

Two years later England won the series 3-0 and the Second Test at Lord’s again by an innings; Shrewsbury set an English Test record of 164 but was bettered by W.G. Grace in the next match.

The History of The Oval Cricket Ground UK Cricket Tickets
The first cricket Test match played in England was at the Kennington Oval, in south London, in September 1880. There had already been three Test matches pitting England versus Australia in Melbourne in 1876 and two years later. But Test cricket arrived in England with a victory for the hosts by five wickets, played on September 6th, 7th and 8th. W.G. Grace, batting alongside his two brothers, top scored for England with a match-winning 152, compiling the first hundred partnership in Test cricket.

The History of Trent Bridge Cricket Ground UK Cricket Tickets
The third oldest Test ground in the world staged its inaugural match on June 1st 1899. Founded in 1838 behind the Trent Bridge Inn by William Clarke, the later 1886 pavilion moulded the future development of the Nottingham ground. The First Test in the 1899 Ashes series was a draw; England captain W.G. Grace played his last match aged 50 years and 320 days. Only Wilfred Rhodes was older when he played Tests and also made his debut in this match.

The History of Headingley Cricket Ground UK Cricket Tickets
Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which was founded in 1863, only played their first match at their Headingley ground in 1891. Eight years later, the first Test match at the Leeds venue took place on June 29th, 1899. This third match of the series against Australia ended in a draw and J.T. Hearne took a hat-trick in the match for England.
